Day 25
Lunch with retirees was nice, we hadn’t met since last November. I felt as though I missed a meeting but I had not. One meeting was cancelled due to foul weather forecast. The area schools had taken the predictions and closed for the day. Our president said if the working educators couldn’t be out, then all the retired educators shouldn’t!
Today we had an author, Matt Chaney as a guest speaker. Thirty years ago he had written a successful book about the 1950’s winning basketball team from my small town. I had purchased signed copies of this book and always look forward to listening to the thoughts of a published author. Several guests attended because they expected him to talk about that topic. Instead he had written a new book about this area. That reminded me of a song written and sung by Rick Nelson, about how hard it is to go home again Garden Party
His new book focuses on the musical abilities of rural southern people, River Shows, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz and Country Music, It All Equals Rockabilly Part 1. He researched much area history to write this book. He credited his research and writing to a favored college professor from Southeast Missouri State University. He mentioned several remote areas that no longer exist. His talk was very interesting because he named buildings, places and people that many of us knew.
He encouraged us to become researchers and writers. That’s something I aspire to…
What an exciting luncheon and lecture, and yes, You would be perfect at researching and writing a book! :)
